I was in Värmland last week, doing research for my exam work. Apart from taking photographs, having lots of fika and revisiting dear places, I have been browsing through multiple second hand shops in my search for material to use in my project. The thought is to make some sort of installation out of found objects with a connection to my "native lands". I have no idea where this will end. What I do have is a lot of odd little things. Spent last weekend in Stockholm, doing exam-work related stuff. I also took the opportunity to go and see some exhibitions. Luckily, there were no less than two at the same museum that served me a serious load of inspiration for my project. Right now at Nordiska Museet, there is a fantastic little exhibition on Swedish school sloyd. Let's just say it spoke directly to my heart :) The impression of all these little objects togehther was very special.

Upstairs there was another collection of handmade objects, the Folk Art exhibition, gathered from places all over Sweden. It was a vast mix of mittens, garments, embroidery, bed linen, furniture, tools, cutlery and... just objects. Fun, inspiring and rampantly creative!

I have a thing for cross stitch. The bigger the better. No, not really, I like them tiny too. But this one is huge. I called it "monumental embroidery" in the beginning, but that's not really what it is either. It's simply a cross stitched masonite board (measuring 161 x 122 cm). I had fun. I want to do another one. The cross stitch pattern comes from my favourite book of old Värmland samplers, and the work is part of my autumn project.

The previous post with the little red house made me long for summer. It's -17 outside now! How long will I have to wait? I'm so Swedish.

The red house in this post is not the same as the other one, it's a sorry little thing on the other side of the road from our country house. A friend of my grandmother's was born and raised there; Ethel, a textile artist. It's a very sweet little house, which I would like to repair one day. It deserves better.

Another nice thing that you can only do in the summertime is going on the little 1960's railbus in Dalsland. That was my way of transportation when I worked at a gallery last summer. Not bad at all.

You can always trust Fine Little Day for new, inspiring things. Recently stumbled across the work of Sabine Timm. Well, I'm inspired now! These pictures make me realise, somehow, what creativity means to me and why there is no end to my ideas or lust for making things all the time...

I'm gathering loads of inspirational material these days, in terms of preparing for my upcoming BFA exam project. Starts in three weeks!

And like the autumn project, my work still evolves around my "native lands"; identity, origin and our family photographs. This photograph from 1965 shows my great grandmother and friend outside the house where she grew up. I would like to find out if that house still exists. The start of my project will be a little expedition to Värmland, quite naturally.

Got this invitation in my inbox today. Grand opening on Saturday 28th at Mimmi Staaf Möbelmakeri, a brand new shop in Stockholm where you can buy remake furniture, jewellery, books, Granliden mittens and more. Unfortunately I won't be in Stockholm this weekend, but I'll make sure to drop by next time I'm there!

Ta-da! Next weekend I'll be featured at INTERNATIONAL STYLE STATION at Depot BG in Amsterdam! How nice is that!

It's an exhibition and pop-up-store featuring a selection of young creatives from different areas such as photography, jewellery, graphic design, craft and fashion. I'll show and sell the Granliden mittens as well as the Scallops prints. If you are in Amsterdam, be sure to check it out!

And thank you, organizers Zsuzsanna Ilijin, Sandra Turina and Barbara Hennequin, for inviting me :) I'm glad to take part in an event like this!

While being home for the holidays, I took the chance to go through some old boxes (my favourite thing to do) and found things from my mum's childhood. Wooden toys, 50's Lego and little picture books.

This one, Charles Perrault's "Puss in boots" (or "Mästerkatten i stövlar" in Swedish) was among the stories I admired the most as a kid, probably because of the fantastic illustrations by John Parr Miller. I just image googled him and oh my, it's going to be a long night. Mid-century picture book illustrations, I just can't get enough of them. I suggest you too image google J P Miller now.

My webshop is not so tidy at the moment. Many colours are finished up and so the photo is not so up to date as it should be. I am about to update soon, with only the colours available and nice photo(s). I will eventually add some "new" colours to the range - some really nice ones.

But I do forgive myself for being such a lazy bugger. I have had a nice and fairly unoccupied holiday, where FIKA has been the main purpose of everything. Ate my last Lucia saffron bun yesterday.

This little house is situated in Kristinehamn, not far from the house where I grew up. I have always walked past it and liked it. Now I have heard that it might be demolished. What a shame! It's a really lovely house, with two big rooms, one bedroom and tilted 50's cabinet doors in the kitchen. I dream of taking it over, perhaps turning it into a combined studio and tiny gallery... I don't know how, but it must be rescued somehow.

SHOP UPDATE!

Finally, the prints are up in the shop! They are nice digital prints on off-white 240g paper. Shipping included in the price.

The first is a picture I made from a photo taken in the Garden at Bodnant in Wales when my granny, grandad and auntie were there in 1972.

The second is a photo that my mom took in the summer of 1982 at Granliden, when they had just dyed a big batch of Coschenille wool. Yes, it's the same wool as in the mittens!

The third is the "Empty Room"-project I did in my second year, where I built a little altar using old family tableware and kitchen paraphernalia.

The fourth is one of the pages in my fanzine, Xhärad.

I'm reallly pleased I got around to do them, after having been thinking about it for quite some time. Enjoy!

Julform went well! Pretty intense - I was almost knacked by the time I got home - but great. It's such good practise in communication in every way. I played around a bit with my display, too see how people approached it. Very interesting. After I threw all the mittens out on the table, business increased :)

Met a lot of inspiring people, and did some trading with some of them a the end of the market - for example this awesome print, and a fine velvet pillow case. I like trading.

This week I am also Elisabeth's assistant at Fine Little Day, helping her out with all sorts of things. There are a lot of preparations to be done before the market, and the studio was crowded with people the whole day through. It was a lot of fun, I like it busy!

I also took the chance to get some new shots of the mittens. The colour "Krapp" (red) is missing in the photos, but will be back for the market. I just got them from my granny in the mail today! And of course, they are just perfect.

Here are some photographs I took this autumn using a borrowed Olympus OM-1 with a 21mm wide-angle lens. There is something about analogue photography, maybe it's the slowness of the process I like? Or simply the idea that it is analogue. I seem to have a weakness for the tedious and ceremonious, be it either knitting or photography. Efficiency is not my trademark.

Actually, some of these colours are sold out by now, but I'll do a little update in my webshop soon where some "new" ones will be introduced. They are mostly different shades of brown, but oh so lovely!

Today is the release of new webshop We Love This Product! I am one of the featured artists/designers and the product they love is my mittens, in Skvattram dye. They are availabe here,and here you can read more about the concept.

I understand that I will probably have to do some new dyes myself sooner of later, as the found wool is slowly decreasing. There will be a new collection of mittens from wool dyed by me, in a smaller selection of colours. I think I would go for indigo, coschenille, birch leaves and different kinds of lichen - which means blue, pink, yellow and brown.

Today we had our mid-term presentation, discussing our work so far. I'm working with a project about home, origin, identity and family. It's a kind of transcription of a certain mood that I find in our family photographs but also in some places I knew as a child. (This one in particular...)

The project will continue until after christmas, then it will most likely transform into my exam work (which I'm looking forward to with a feeling of delight mixed with terror)

There are a lot of mittens going on at the moment.

First, they are soon appearing in the "Hemslöjden 100 år" exhibition (opens 12th November) in Skövde, Sweden - a celebration of Swedish craft through a hundred years. Second, they are featured in the December issue of Swedish Elle Interiör. Looks pretty fabulous. Will post a copy of the spread here soon. And last but not least, I have been in touch with a few shops that are interested in stocking my mittens! Not bad at all. So, from now on I have to knit like a little machine. I decided I could use some assistance, and have now "employed" my dear granny to help me knit! My spinoff project is slowly turning into a family business.

I'm spending time in our colour lab, working from the samples I did from the photos ealier. It is slow and time-consuming work, but fun and rewarding. The feeling of being able to make the exact colour you want is quite satisfactory! The result is soon to be shown here...

For the following months, I will use it as an image bank for my autumn project in school, which I started today... Printing, cutting and glueing into books is sometimes just too slow.

This is Granliden - our old summer place. A small cabin that my grandfather built in 1955 and the location on where the wool for the famous Granliden Mittens was dyed with forest plants and vegetables in 1982. We don't own this place any more, and in my mind the memories of Granliden has begun to take on mythical proportions... I took this polaroid on one of my little secret visits to the dearest place I know.

Yesterday was the opening of the WOW! - Walking on water exhibition at Galleri Vals. It is a water themed group exhibition and I show my boats with embroidered sails. There is also a film collage of short clips where some of my boat videos are featured. The whole thing is accompanied by a collage of water sounds, put together by artist Joe Bell. It's situated in Håverud by the Dalsland canal, so there is also a constant sound of pouring water from the locks outside the gallery - quite an experience! Go and see. Photographs does not do it justice...

Stills from a little film I'm working on, called "The Local Patriot part 1 - The Fleet". The boats are made from carved pine bark and the sails are decorated with old cross stitch symbols from Värmland, where I come from. It's about origin, identity, pride, disappointment and nostalgia - and at the same time a homage to my childhood games.

Det är mycket vantar nu. Idag har jag fotograferat alla färger som finns hittills, dels för dokumentation och dels för att uppdatera webbshopen. Just nu håller jag som bäst på med att packa min första order som ska bege sig till Australien!

Granliden mittens har även blivit bloggade här. Nu måste jag jobba med att fixa en snygg "förpackning", etiketter och lite annat till vantarna. Åh, jag kan inte säga att det känns jobbigt precis. Allt runtomkring-material är ju det roligaste!

Tidigt imorse packade jag ner åtta par vantar i en tygpåse och begav mig till Göteborg för att träffa Elisabeth Dunker, tidningen Hemslöjd och två studenter från HDK för att diskutera/intervjuas, fotograferas och fika lite. Det handlade förstås om Upmarket/Upfresh! Jag är mycket nyfiken på att se vad det blir i slutändan. Trevligt var det hur som helst!

Mer från "Paraphernalia". Det handlar om samlingar, systematik och urval. Jag gjorde research på Naturhistoriska Muséet i Göteborg, som har en förnämlig samling tufsiga djur i dammiga montrar. Alltså, precis vad jag letade efter. Sen gjorde jag en egen samling av föremål jag hittade hemma, och sorterade dem i ett system baserat på för slags föremål det var, var det kom ifrån och från vilken tid det var.

Helgen spenderades i Kristinehamn, med obligatoriska inslag som tretår och loppisrunda. Jag har sagt det förut men jag måste säga det igen: Kristinehamn är en fantastisk loppisstad!

Den här gången hittade jag bland annat dessa tjusiga skor från 40-talet. Med tanke på att de är i toppskick, av märket Salvatore Ferragamo samt låg i originalkartong tycker jag att 40 kronor är ett synnerligen blygsamt pris. Jag älskar Pingstkyrkans loppis.

Nu har jag grejat klart i det tomma rummet. Vad det blev visar jag om några dagar, när presentationen är överstökad.

Innan jag gick plockade jag ner allting och la undan det för att göra plats åt Kristin som ska vara där imorgon. Jag har aldrig förut fått tillfälle att stoppa in en trädgren i en garderob. Kändes helt okej.

När jag hittar en fin bild - vilket jag ofta gör - så får jag ibland en impuls att göra så här med den. Varför vet jag inte, kanske tror jag att den blir dubbelt så bra då? Kanske för att jag aldrig ägt något kaleidoskop? I vilket fall som helst så tycker jag om att ordna saker symmetriskt.

Jag har alltid varit svag för det ytterst sakliga sätt på vilket man formgav många EP-omslag under 60-talet. En bild på artisterna, en informativ text; bandnamn, låttitlar. Inget jäkla krångel! Delar ur mitt projekt "Solbacken Revisited". Det handlar om att hitta på, berätta och utforska en historia som redan finns, om att spränga tiden och kliva in i ett sammanhang som man egentligen redan ingår i. Det är historien om min familj, sett från min egen mycket eskapistiska, glorifierande och luftslottiga synvinkel. Frågan är om det är möjligt att vara nostalgisk över något man själv inte upplevt, och om det verkligen var bättre förr.

Jag håller på att skriva en essä om identitet, där detta projekt är ganska centralt. Därav idén att dokumentera det lite noggrannare.

Under julen ska jag passa på att titta igenom familjens samlade diabilder från 60-talet i jakt på nytt gammalt material att arbeta med. Jag tror jag kommer hålla på med det här för evigt faktiskt.

Jag har givit mig i kast med Pelikanen av Strindberg, och jag undrar vem han ville mörda när han skrev den.

Handlingen kretsar kring en milt uttryckt dysfunktionell familj. Det är dödsfall, fulspel, pakter, otrohet, utsvultna lungsjuka barn och en sällsynt snål och misogyn mamma. Till råga på allt elände är det jävligt kallt och pjäsen slutar med att familjens hem brinner upp.
Det är tragikomik och melodrama på högsta nivå!

Jag har oförskämt roligt. Nu har jag jobbat med research i cirka två veckor, och det börjar ta form. För tillfället är jag mest road av att teckna edvardianska sorgkläder och göra collage!

Studiebesöket på Independent Kostym i Frihamnen i torsdags gav mig men för livet, vill jag påstå. Jag har aldrig sett så mycket kläder i hela mitt liv. Jag har aldrig sett 50 meter klädstänger enbart dedikerade åt "60-talsklänningar, korta". Det var allt från barockbyxor och guldkavajer till folkdräkter och kanelbulledräkter. Hade det varit en loppis hade jag fått slag. Det var trångt, varmt och lite dunkelt, svårt att fotografera. Men detta är åtminstone lite av vad jag såg. Det är som fina färgkartor!

Ömsa skinn, växa upp

Näe, Returen i Dals Långed gör mig sällan besviken. Fyndat: prima höstkappa från 60-talet, i äkta Terylene, "wool worsted" som de påstår. Pris: 50 kronor.

Det finns många skäl till att jag gillar att bo här ute i obygden.
